Carpark harvest produces a bumper crop
Prevented from holding their traditional Harvest Festival by the Covid pandemic, a north Leeds church decided the next best thing would be to set up a drive through drop off point in their carpark
Shelly Dring, the Children and Families Worker at Moortown Baptist Church came up with the idea after hearing that referrals to the Leeds North and West Foodbank, which has a branch close to the church, had increased by more than 30 per cent since the start of lockdown.
The result was well over 100 people either walked or drove through the carpark bringing donations of everything from soap to soup and tinned ham to toilet rolls.
'It was great,' said Shelley, 'the whole thing went way beyond my expectations.
'Of course many of our regular congregation dropped by and after six months of doing church online it was lovely to see them but also, it was especially pleasing to meet some folk we didn’t know, people who over the last few days had simply seen one of our social media posts and turned up wanting to help.'
