Prayer is difficult. Or is that just me? If not, as I suspect, then this short book is a useful resource for both individuals and groups. It does exactly as the title suggests, briefly describing 15 different kinds of prayer, giving practical suggestions on how to try them, and including books and/or websites for those who want to explore a particular method further. There are also a couple of lined pages for readers to make notes, and more at the end of the book. It could be worked through over the 15 weeks in a group, or used individually in any order.

The list is broad, with some which may be familiar to many, such as intercessory prayer, lectio divina and journalling. Perhaps, at least to some people, praying with your creativity, with a labyrinth or with music might be less so.

This would be good to use in a group, or to gift to someone who is new to faith (I wish I had been given something similar decades ago) to help them see the wide variety of ways to pray.

Equally, perhaps many of us who have been Christians for a long time might benefit from spreading our prayer wings a little to try something new.

Jeannie Kendall is a ‘retired’ Baptist minister, speaker, trainer and until recently a tutor in Pastoral Supervision. She is the author of four books and is currently working on a fifth, a devotional book covering the whole of Luke’s gospel
