Prayer Reflection Video - 19 February

Be still before the Lord

Verse: Psalm 37: 7

Reflection

Hi I’m Lisa Kerry, the Regional Team Leader for the Central Baptist Association.

Perhaps you are a little like me in that the most difficult part of this season of prayer and stillness is the stillness! We are an active people and yet so often God’s first command to his people in trouble is to be still and wait for him to act.

Psalm 37 verse 7 says; 'Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him: do not fret …'
This psalm of David seems to me to remind himself that waiting on God in stillness is actually the most sensible thing to do at times of anxiety and stress; even when it seems that evil is triumphing around him he says, "do not fret".

How easy it is to fall into the fretting pattern. We long to wait patiently for God but we just can’t cope with the apparent non-activity of that waiting. Instead we fret away urging the one who is never late and never anxious to move and work to our timetable. It seems ridiculous when we think about it like that and yet it is so difficult to just be still and wait for the God who is always perfect in his timing and grace.

Prayer
Loving God,
We thank you that you are never rushed and never fret; that you are always on time and never late.
Forgive us when we try to hurry you to conform to our timetable.
Help us to hold on to your unhurried grace in anxious times.
May we be a people who can be still before you, trusting in your perfect timing and grace.
As the world around us rushes to action and seems so often to be in the hands of the wicked, may we know what it means to be still and trust in you.
Amen
