God's perspective
Verses:
2 Kings 6: 8-23

Reflection

As we focus in as Baptists Together on what God is doing in this period of being still before God, I am reminded of the account in 2 Kings 6.

But one of my favourite characters in this account is Elisha’s servant: he is the guy who goes around with Elisha and helps him while Elisha is getting all these prophetic messages.

Because of the prophetic messages God has been communicating to Elisha, he and his servant have found themselves in the middle of a potential civil war.

The account says that Elisha’s servant goes out early in the morning and the city is completely surrounded by an army with horses and chariots – all looking for him and Elisha!
There was no way out.

He comes back to Elisha and the Bible says he says: ‘Alas, my master what shall we do?’

And Elisha says to him: ‘Don’t be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’

Elisha had God’s perspective.

And in this moment: when any human would be completely freaked out, Elisha has hope: so he prays that his servant would be able to see the situation from God’s perspective.

And there is this amazing moment when Elisha prays and the servant’s eyes open: suddenly he is able to see what is really going on.

God has totally got them covered.

And I love this scripture because, for me, sometimes prayer doesn’t work immediately; sometimes it feels like hard work, sometimes I just have to keep going and going.

Sometimes, doubt and fear get in the way.

This scripture reminds me that I / we should be praying that God would open our eyes to see what he is doing:

Prayer
Lord God, we thank you that we are called to ministry and mission in your name.
We thank you that you have provided for us in the previous weeks, months and days.
We come to you Lord God, as a Baptist Movement, facing different things, experiencing different challenges and joys – yet we are one in you and we ask that in this season you would open our eyes.
That we would have the grace to see what you are doing, that we would know in our heart, mind and spirit that we, as individuals and together, are yours, and you have us covered.

Lord God, when we feel surrounded; when we feel we do not have all the answers; when we can’t see all the path ahead of us, would you give us your perspective.

Lord God, we ask for forgiveness for the times when we have moved in our own strength, when we have failed to look up to see what you are doing.
Holy Spirit help us to focus on what you are doing in the heavenly realm that we might together see and hear what you are doing, that we would reflect your perspective in our thoughts, words and deeds.
Amen.
