'Extraordinary acts of kindness' 

Lockdown has seen many extraordinary acts of kindness shown by ordinary people towards others, not least in New Brighton, Wallasey

Shirley Bowen, a member of New Brighton Baptist Church,  along with husband Tom and a team of volunteers, have been taking free food-parcels to needy households in New Brighton and across Wallasey, since March. Over 1,000 parcels have been distributed and the links made with families and individuals has led to other types of help being offered, as well. It has had a social benefit to the area, as relationships have been built and it has meant a temporary breaking of social isolation for some delivery recipients, for a short while.

Already an activist, Shirley responded to the lockdown by quickly arranging for vital help to go to households she was already aware of. In the early days of lockdown, food-parcels were going out two or three times each week, and now that things have settled a little, Shirley, Tom and team deliver around 30 food-parcels on a weekly basis. 

Each food-parcel is a healthy balance of food and drink, including both meat and vegetarian products. Other basic essentials are often included.

Donations come in from Morrisons in New Brighton, individual neighbours of the church, and partners including Heart of Egremont, Claremount Food Hub and the Oak Project at Christ the King church in Birkenhead.
