Munro challenge going strong

Four months into his Scottish mountain challenge, intrepid Baptist deacon Robert Sneath has upped the ante

Robert Sneath250Robert of Barnoldswick Baptist Church in Lancashire, joined the Christian Aid 70th Anniversary challenge to climb 70 munros (Scottish mountains over 3000ft high) in April.

His original challenge was to climb 32 of these munros in six months, by 2 October 2015.

However Robert has already completed 26 walks and has now decided to complete an additional four.

All well as the walking, the fundraising is also going well: Robert has so far raised £2,597.45, 85 per cent of his £3000 target.

Pleased with his progress so far, Robert said, 'All in all it has been a terrific experience, and has now become more of an adventure than a challenge.'

Unsuprisingly, weather conditions in the Scottish mountains have impacted the challenge, but Robert remains positive: 'All the walks have been enjoyable bar one, which had to be abandoned due to adverse weather conditions, but the views, of which there have been many, have been absolutely amazing.'

According to its website, Christian Aid hope that these ventures into the Scottish wilderness will, in their words, 'give a refreshed view of how the world can be, where all are free from the scandal of poverty.'

Approximately 200 people have taken up the Christian Aid Munro challenge.

Education Coordinator and Churches Resource Officer, Wendy Young said: 'We are delighted that people have chosen to join us as we mark these 70 years of overcoming poverty, moving mountains of injustice and walking in solidarity with our partners.'

Though the majority of Robert's epic task is now in the bag, he still has quite a challenge ahead of him.

His next walks are in September with two ridge walks, Five Sisters of Kintail (three summits), and South Glen Shiel Ridge (seven summits).
