'God calls us to serve him in healthy churches; it’s not about the numbers'

Hilary Taylor reports on the latest Hemel Hempstead small church hub

Fifteen people from four churches came together at the latest hub meeting at Belmont Road Baptist Church, Hemel Hempstead. After tea and cake, we worshipped together, brought words and pictures during a prophecy session, shared news and prayed. We also launched the new WhatsApp group for the hub where one rep from each church is linked to the group to share prayer requests, reliable tradesmen, practical help and invitations.

News was also sent from three other churches not able to attend. There was much to pray for!

We celebrated that Belmont Road Baptist Church have someone on the Exploring Ministry course at Bristol Baptist College and Markyate Baptist Church have a new minister-in-training. Out of the nine small churches, only two have a minister in post currently. Many of the churches are building on their connections in the community with activities such as Coffee Break, Toddler Church, Community café & Messy Church.

We also celebrated that London Colney Baptist Church had been given money for a new kitchen which has benefitted them and the two other churches that use their premises.

Among the items for prayer were various Christmas plans including ‘Carols on the Canal’ (Chenies Baptist Church) and a new venture with a production company in Harefield! We prayed for all the churches in pastoral vacancy and for the leadership teams, many of whom have full time jobs as well. Buildings are always a time-consuming issue and two churches are undergoing refurbishment to upgrade to an accessible toilet.

We prayed for all the churches, especially the two smallest, Wigginton Baptist Church with six members and Weston Turville Union Chapel with 13 members. Both churches have a warm family feel at their morning worship. God calls us to serve him in healthy churches; it’s not about the numbers! Dorothy still serves by playing the piano at Weston Turville even though she is 97 years old!

The hubs continue to be a source of regular encouragement and fellowship to the churches.
