'The perfect gift' for churches to share at VE Day
Churches are invited to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day by sharing a special edition of John’s Gospel with their communities
The commemorative gospel invites readers 'to reflect on the past and find hope for the future', says producers Hope Together, which exists to resource local churches in evangelism.
As well as the full Gospel of John, it includes four powerful testimonies from Christians during WWII, such as a Private whose faith was sustained in a prisoner of war camp and a little girl who learned how God answers prayer after losing her Bible in a bombing raid.
It is inspired by an original 1939 Bible design distributed to soldiers during the war.
Many featured a special message by King George VI encouraging soldiers to turn to God in times of hardship. They offered comfort and hope for soldiers, many of whom carried them into battle.
Hope Together says it has produced this commemorative edition of John’s Gospel in partnership with Biblica 'to remember those who sacrificed their lives in the war, to celebrate and be thankful for the end of WWII, and to pray for peace for all those around the world whose lives are destroyed by conflict today.'
It adds, 'Designed to accompany the UK government's VE Day 80 celebration plans, it enables churches to serve and connect with their communities by sharing it in schools and at commemorative events.'
VE Day - Victory in Europe Day - marked the official surrender of all German military operations on 8 May.
The new resource has been welcomed by Baptists. General Secretary Lynn Green said, 'This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II - a time to celebrate peace and pray for those around the world who experience conflict today.
'As those who follow Jesus, The Prince of Peace, this is a real opportunity for local churches to host community events of thankfulness and remembrance. The beautiful commemorative John’s gospels specially produced by Hope Together are the perfect gift to share for schools, services and VE day street parties.'
Nigel Coles, Regional Minister Team Leader Webnet, said, 'Hope Togethers resourcing of the church for key cultural moments helps us seize the mission opportunity.
'The 80th anniversary of WWII John’s gospel is a tool in our hands to reach our communities at this time.'

The WWII Commemorative Gospel of John is now available through the Hope Together shop.
Additionally, through Hope Together's partnership with the Naval and Military Bible Society, it will be shared with current servicemen and women via chaplains and scripture readers.
