The event, part of the Leigh-on-Sea church's Open Summer Exhibition 2024, celebrated the powerful connection between faith and creativity, making it a memorable night for all who attended.

The church has hosted an exhibition in its windows and welcome area across late July and August, making space for and welcoming submissions from all; established local artists, emerging talent, schools and hobbyists of all ages.

The evening on Tuesday, 27 August saw saw artists, friends, family, and members of the general public come together to celebrate the intersection of faith and creativity.

With over 40 artists submitting their work, the exhibition space was transformed into a vibrant hub of discussion and reflection. Attendees explored the deeper meanings and emotions behind the art pieces, which spanned a range of styles and interpretations.

Free refreshments flowed throughout the evening, complemented by newly released music that underscored themes of faith, life, and the universal experiences that bind us all.

'We are immensely grateful to the more than 40 artists who contributed to our inaugural Faith in Art Open Exhibition,' said Andrew Cowley, minister of LRBC.

'Their incredible creativity ignited meaningful conversations and inspired many to reflect on the profound questions that life presents.

'It was truly wonderful to witness the works of established artists showcased alongside the vibrant artwork of Darlinghurst Academy school children, creating a beautiful tapestry of artistic expression and community.'

One of the evening's highlights was the opportunity for visitors to enter the LRBC Sanctuary, where life-size replicas of six renowned Christian artworks were displayed. These masterpieces included:

  • The Storm on the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt
  • Christ of St. John of the Cross by Salvador Dali
  • The Angelus by Jean-Francois Millet
  • Creation of Adam by Michelangelo Buonarroti
  • Light of the World by Holman Hunt
  • Return of the Prodigal by Rembrandt

These iconic pieces have been central to LRBC’s Sunday morning talks throughout the summer, sparking insightful conversations and reflections on faith and spirituality.

Exhibiting artist Jane Brooks expressed her appreciation, stating, 'Well, that was rather marvellous, thanks for organising the exhibition and making it happen. It goes without saying that I loved it… so much art and community in the same place.'

The success of Faith in Art: An Evening with the Artists 'underscores Leigh Road Baptist Church’s commitment to fostering community connections through the arts', the church stated

'This event marks a significant moment in LRBC’s cultural calendar, blending art and faith in a way that resonates deeply with all who participate.'
