New Brian Haymes book launched

Contributions and Struggles: Some Theological Contributions brings together a selection of Brian's essays and sermons, edited posthumously. It launched at a thanksgiving service for Brian's ministry and life

Brian Haymes thanksgiving service - Karen Smith, Simon Woodman, Debby Hallam (Brian's daughter), Jenny Haymes, Paul Fiddes, Ruth Gouldbourne and Keith Jones

The annual meeting of the Baptist Historical Society was followed by a service of thanksgiving for the life and ministry of Brian Haymes, held on 28 May at Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church, where Brian served as minister from 2000 to 2005. Brian died in 2024.

Throughout his life, Brian contributed significantly to the life of the Baptist community, publishing in the Baptist Quarterly and speaking at the Society’s summer conferences.

A true pastor-theologian, his active ministry spanned from the 1960s to the early 2000s. He pastored churches in Bristol, Exeter, and Nottingham, served as Principal of both Northern and Bristol Baptist Colleges, and later returned to pastoral ministry in London. In 1993, he served as President of the Baptist Union.

Several copies of the book Contributions and Struggles by Brian Haymes laid on a table, with a copy of the dedication service sheetAs part of the thanksgiving, a new book by Brian was also launched. Contributions and Struggles: Some Theological Contributions brings together a selection of his essays and sermons, edited posthumously.

'This rich collection explores themes including Baptist identity, the political implications of baptism, integrity in preaching, and the communion of saints,' stated the website introducing the book. 'It is profoundly personal yet theologically rigorous, offering glimpses of a faith lived thoughtfully and faithfully.

'Whether addressing the nature of ministry, the challenge of Christian realism, or the mystery of knowing God, Haymes writes with humility, clarity, and deep spiritual insight. Ideal for pastors, students, and all who seek to think deeply about faith, church, and discipleship in a changing world, this volume invites readers to join the ongoing theological journey of one who himself might be described as a person who “made you think of God”.'

The book 'stands as a fitting legacy, bearing witness to his theological depth, intellectual clarity, and enduring pastoral concern,' noted Simon Woodman, the current minister of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church.
