The Revd Gary Peter Patchen: 1961–2025
'A man of deep conviction, wisdom, and kindness. He was loved by all who knew him and will be profoundly missed'
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of the Revd Gary Peter Patchen, a devoted husband, father, brother, minister, and friend. Gary left this world on Thursday, 13 March 2025, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and unwavering dedication to his calling.
Born in Liverpool to his parents, Tom and Hilda, Gary grew up with a love for sport, particularly football. He played for West Derby Boys School and remained a passionate Liverpool FC supporter throughout his life.
Despite his naturally shy nature—fondly described by his sister Hilary as a “blue-eyed boy”—he discovered his true purpose at the age of 15 through his school’s Christian Union.
Gary pursued a Biology degree at Bangor University, where he immersed himself in snooker, squash, and photography, and where he met Susan, the love of his life. Their bond was strengthened by Susan introducing Gary to badminton—which became of Gary’s great sporting joys. In 1982, his commitment to faith took him to India as part of a mission team, and his leadership qualities soon saw him elected President of the Christian Union.
Feeling a profound calling to ministry in 1983—inspired by Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones’ book Preaching and Preachers—Gary continued his studies in theology at Bangor University. He cultivated a keen sense of financial prudence, although sometimes his meticulous search for a bargain led to more effort than savings.
After his marriage to Susan in July 1986, Gary embraced his ministerial journey, serving first as a travelling secretary for UCCF in Scotland for four years before pursuing his calling to the Baptist ministry. Ordained on 6 July 1991, he began his first pastorate at Calderwood Baptist Church in East Kilbride, where his two sons, Matthew and John, were born.
His ministry continued at York Baptist Church from 2002, where he had the privilege of baptising his mother. Tragedy struck when Matthew passed away at age 25, leading to an extended break from ministry. Gary later faced his own battle with bowel cancer in 2020, triumphing over the illness after successful treatment.
In 2022, Gary was welcomed into Billingham Baptist Church, a congregation that took him into their hearts. Even as his cancer returned in 2023, he continued to preach faithfully, offering profound teaching and spiritual guidance that deeply enriched the lives of many. His commitment extended beyond the pulpit, as he often visited hospital patients after receiving his own chemotherapy—a testament to his selflessness and compassion.
Beyond his ministry, Gary was a traveler, a lover of long walks, and a planner of wonderful days out across Yorkshire and Northumberland. His interest in science, history, and sports made him a formidable quiz expert, though the simplest of technology issues often left him perplexed.
Through all the joys and struggles of life, Jesus remained Gary’s ultimate hope, and his profound love for scripture shaped everything he did. His heart was dedicated to teaching, encouraging faith, and fostering a strong sense of community within his church. He took great delight in seeing people come to faith and was a passionate advocate for growth through house groups.
Gary’s preaching was marked by authenticity and unwavering integrity, always pointing people toward God’s truth. He created a church environment where all felt valued and encouraged to use their gifts, ensuring no one faced life’s challenges alone.
Even in his final days, Gary was preparing a sermon—a reflection of his devotion to the word of God. Though he did not finish that sermon, his legacy of faith, service, and love will forever resonate with those who had the privilege of knowing him.
"Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him; God is our refuge." Psalm 62:8
The Revd Gary Peter Patchen was a man of deep conviction, wisdom, and kindness. He was loved by all who knew him and will be profoundly missed. May he rest in the eternal peace of Christ, his Saviour.
