Windows on Worldviews800Re: Making sense of the secular humanist worldview

Patricia Gray commends the Reality Bites short films as: "non-preachy, appealing and up-to-the minute". And Mark in his account here of what the short-film series seeks to highlight, actually does the same thing.

By listening carefully to the comments that people make about their lives - in this case as Mark reports of the efforts youngsters are actually making to articulate their own groping spirituality - we are given examples of how it is of unpriceable value to take seriously the words that are on the lips of those who are brought across our paths.

Mark's article, like the short films themselves, is winsome and compelling precisely because he demonstrates a Christian ethic of listening carefully and responding in ways that can be truly helpful, truly loving. Thanks for publishing this and getting the word out about Windows on Worldviews to thereby contribute to A-level and GCSE Philosophy, Ethics and Religious Studies in all schools! Good work.

As a teacher I was very excited to discover the new worldview videos available from West Yorkshire's Thinking Faith Network. Talking heads are an instant turn off for kids, so the fact that these are dialogues with proper actors assuming a variety of roles is what really inspired me. There is a subtlety and wit about them that draws the kids in...also a multi-dimensionality e.g. 'The Beast' [about an infamous mafioso] is tackling evil, free will, darwinism, and universalism all at the same time!

Highly recommended

This is so encouraging and not unlike our experience at Vale Baptist Church, Todmorden, West Yorkshire. When I retired as minister 7 years or so ago, we appointed a Church Evangelist/community link person part time. My gifts were pastoral and my vision had been to build up the church, encourage people to use their gifts and generally equip them for when I was no longer there. My successor has built on that and we share leadership as a team of deacons.

Covid enabled outreach to people coming to the food hub operating in the church. We actually grew during Covid and now have more people attending and coming to events at church (parent/toddlers, Work out to Eat out (dance followed by a meal), Elevenses on a Monday morning, Men's Breakfast and the list goes on).
