BMS helps man to get chicks
Thanks to your support for the Loans for Life appeal, a new chicken business is taking off in Mozambique and helping a family out of poverty
This cute picture of chicks was made possible by you! It was taken in Mozambique at the first Loans for Life [link] microfinance project to start in the city of Beira – a chicken business set up by Chico.
Chico started the chicken business after receiving project management training from BMS World Mission worker Fiona Welsh and a BMS partner in Beira. He approached Fiona with a proposal of starting a business rearing chickens for sale and got a loan. With the money, he was able to purchase 200 chicks. He is planning to buy more chicks when these have a few weeks’ growth, with the plan that there would always be chickens at various stages of growth in the aviary he constructed with his son Alfândega. Once the chicks become chickens, they will be sold to buy more chicks and make a profit too.
Without the money you gave to the Loans for Life appeal and the training from Fiona, Chico would never have gotten his chicken business off the ground. A security guard by trade, the extra money will enable Chico to provide more for his family in an area which suffers from extreme poverty. Two other Loans for Life supported businesses are underway in Mozambique with three more in the pipeline.
Seeing Chico’s chicken business made an impression on BMS World Mission Team Programmes Administrator Tabi Leask, who visited it with Fiona just days after Chico purchased the chicks.
“Fiona had been saying ‘Let’s go see some chicks’ and I thought: ‘great’,” she says. “But I hadn’t really understood the process that this guy had gone through to get to the stage of having them, the training that he had to undergo and the process of coming up with a business proposal. It was exciting to have more of a sense of what this business could potentially become. The chicks were really cute and fluffy too!”
Help more people like Chico provide more for their families by giving to the Loans for Life appeal
