Whether I sleep or get up…
August is here and for most of us we have the opportunity to slow down and rest. The chance to go on holiday, enjoy a summer's evening around the fire pit, and days out in the sunshine. Even when we are at work the tone is more mellow, with people talking about having space to catch up and get sorted!
There is also a constant thread through our spiritual lives about resting in Jesus and simply delighting in him. Making space for this reminds us that we are not driven but called. Called by love and called into love, joy and peace; the fullness of life. So for the rest of August I am going to be pondering this passage from Mark 4:26-29.
'…whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.'
Now that is a dent in our sense of self-importance! For me, I shall be praying that I have a renewed sense of trust that God is at work and a right sense of my own role within that. This passage tells me that my role is to sow the seed and then also be ready to take action when I see the harvest is ripe. So I see here three different sorts of activity for me as a disciple; sowing, waiting and reaping. I probably will not be doing all of these all of the time, but that is okay. The primary message of this passage is that God has got it covered, his Kingdom will come; we need to trust him and be faithful in playing our part.
