Call to prayer on eve of election

Lynn Green will be attending a public prayer gathering on 6 May, and is encouraging others to do the same, either in London or their own locality

7 14 election prayerThe call to prayer in Parliament Square has been organised by National Day of Prayer Convenor Dr Jonathan Oloyede on 6 May. It's been called the '7.14 Election Prayer' because of the time it will take place, and the Revd Lynn Green, General Secretary of our Baptist Union, will be there.

'I know that prayer changes things and that is why I am heading to Parliament Square to join with many others to pray from 7.14-8.14pm on the eve of the election,' she said. 'Whether you can gather in Parliament Square or in your locality, let's join together to pray "...your Kingdom come, Your will be done.... And don't forget to vote!'

In an open letter to an open letter to Christians, church leaders and prayer activists across the UK, Dr Oloyede calls on them to "stand up, show up and stand out" ahead of the General Election.

He said, 'The outcome of these elections will leave a legacy on this country for decades to come and polls suggest it will be very close to call. Daily and hourly polls keep changing who is in the lead. It is literally that close.

'7.14 Election Prayer is a vision to see Christians of every denomination and none come together for an hour of prayer. For the WHOLE church, young and old, rich and poor, of every race, background and political persuasion to unite in seeking the Lord. Not inside and out of sight,  behind four walls and unseen...but outside! Yes, in the public square! a city on a hill, a light on its stand!'

If they are unable to get into London for the event in Parliament Square, Dr Oloyede has also urged them to meet in 5s, 50s, 500s or even 5000 others on their high street, town centre, market square or anywhere visible including their street. Local events have already been planned in St Helens, Thurrock, Havering, Eastbourne, Stafford and Derby.
