Registering as a verifier

What is the role of a DBS verifier?
The verifier is responsible for processing DBS checks for church staff and volunteers (with the exception of the minister).  This is a crucial role, supporting the churches safeguarding policy and practice.

How are DBS verifiers appointed?
If your church would like to register additional DBS verifiers, their name and contact details should be sent to the Baptist Union’s database administrator using this form and sending it to churchupdate@baptist.org.uk

BUGB will add new verifiers to our national database and will inform DDC so they can issue login information. Please do not contact DDC directly to set up a new verifier as they will not be able to do this.

My contact details have changed - who do I tell?
Please email us at churchupdate@baptist.org.uk and we will make sure that our database of verifiers is updated and that DDC are informed.

What should the verifier do if an applicant’s check is blemished?
If a DBS check comes back with a blemished disclosure, the original certificate and a photocopy, should be send to DDC. The original will be returned to the applicant once the process is complete.
DDC will liaise with the applicant regarding the disclosure and will pass the information to the National Safeguarding Officer so that a risk assessment can be undertaken.
DDC will inform the applicant and verifier in writing of the outcome of the risk assessment and whether or not the applicant has been cleared to work in the role specified.

Keeping your password and login details safe
Please do not share your verifier password and login details with anyone else as they are individual to you. If you need an additional verifier to cover holidays or ill health please let us know and we will arrange for them to have their own login and password. Where several verifiers are in the same church, the DDC system will allow all verifiers at that church to see checks in progress so there is an easy way to share this information with each other.

I am stepping down as a verifier - what should I do?
Firstly, thank you for your work as a verifier, we hope you have found it a rewarding role in the life of your church. To step down please complete our verifier update form. If you are able to give details of the person taking over from you, that would be a great help.
