LCBC ventured back into regular physical services not long after the official guidance in the summer permitted us to do so. Since the summer we have seen a regular number return to Sunday worship but there has still been a large minority who have remained anxious and stay away from gatherings.
The Autumn offered us much needed encouragement. Firstly, in September we baptised a new couple. The baptisms reminded me that the Holy Spirit continues to work away even when our church has been limited with what we can do. In addition, and after a number of years we had found a contractor to undertake the first phase of the modernising of our Church Hall. The work has transformed the space to offer a more welcoming feel. Please pray we can encourage community groups back to rent the hall as this provides a significant amount to our annual budget.
During Advent and the run up to Christmas I was able to go back to helping out in a local primary school. I was also asked to take a lesson for Year 3’s on the symbolism of light and faith during Christmas. I love being able to do this and my relationship with local schools has borne much other fruit.
We also saw the return of LCBC hosting the annual STEP Christmas Carol Service. ‘STEP’ are a local charity that work in local secondary schools by bringing the good news of Jesus to students and staff. I am also their Chaplain and find it incredible what this team is able to do in the name of the gospel in schools.
The Churches Together Food Bank (hosted by LCBC) has been able to stay open all throughout the pandemic. At times it has been a real challenge to keep it open but God has continued to provide, often in wondrous ways. It was the sixth year the Food Bank was able to run its ‘Christmas Parcels Project’. We collect Christmas food goodies and then provide families and individuals in the community with a Christmas hamper. A way to communicate the local churches care about those in our village who struggle. It was another mind-blowing response as we collected over 1400 items and gave out 62 parcels.
