Day for Chaplains
A Day for Baptist Chaplains

Monday 24 January 2022

We are delighted to have the chance to connect together as many as possible of our 200 Baptist chaplains. A recent survey among accredited ministers in chaplaincy highlighted a desire for a national day, so here it is – albeit in an online format on this occasion. There are three sessions – morning, afternoon and evening – each lasting one hour and three quarters. We hope you will be both keen and able to come to all of them, but realise that work commitments and rotas might make this difficult, so you can register for each session separately.

  • In the morning, 10:00 to 11:45, there will be an opportunity to listen to the stories of chaplains from different sectors and regions and a chance to meet, talk with and encourage a small group of fellow chaplains.
  • In the afternoon, 14:00 to 15:45, our focus will be on an interactive webinar with the title 'Witnessing to Christ as chaplains'. Baptist identity is bound up with the Baptist Declaration of Principle, which includes the claim that 'it is the duty of every disciple to bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to take part in the evangelisation of the world'. Talk of 'evangelism' tends to provoke mixed reactions from chaplains and raises questions about the way in which chaplains share their faith in the context to which they are called. This session offers an opportunity to share thoughts and experiences about witnessing to Christ as Baptist chaplains. We will be also be joined in this session by Lynn Green, Baptists Together General Secretary.
  • In the evening, 19:00 to 20:45, we are really pleased that Rosa Hunt, Baptist minister and co-principal of Cardiff Baptist College, will be speaking to us about 'Desire and disorientation' – the moments when we encounter spirituality among those we meet in secular spaces. Singer-songwriter Gareth Davies-Jones will be providing some music and talking about his songwriting.
  • Throughout the day, Baptist Union president Geoff Colmer will be on hand to lead us in some reflection as he continues to encourage all of Baptists Together to be 'attentive to the rhythms of grace'.

Cost per person: The event is free.
Closing date for bookings: Friday 21 January 2022
