We are pleased to present our Baptist Assembly 2021 seminar programme below and hope you are able to join throughout the afternoon of Saturday 15 May.

This year’s seminars will give the opportunity for you to hear people’s stories, views and ideas, with the intention to begin a conversation on particular issues, and with the hope these conversations will continue beyond Baptist Assembly.

Seminar Programme

Saturday 15 May: from 14:00-15:00
  • Seminar 1: 'We Can't Breathe Until You Can'
This seminar will explore white privilege – from a white person’s point of view.
White privilege is often described as people with white skin having advantages in society that other people do not have. Having white privilege doesn't make your life easy, but understanding it can make you realise why some people's lives are harder than they should be.*
In this seminar you will hear the voices and perspectives of white people and their understanding of their racialised behaviour. Stories of discrimination and its impact on people of colour will be shared.
Discussing white privilege from this perspective has become a necessary and honest lens with which to understand racism – and for that reason the contributors in this discussion are all white.

Organised by the Racial Justice Group
* John Amaechi, psychologist, a New York Times best-selling author and a former NBA basketball player https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zrvkbqt

  • Seminar 2: 'Children, Young People and Families - the rebuild'
We know from the news and perhaps from our own experience too, how this past year has taken its toll on our children and young people. Some of our churches have maintained a ministry amongst their children, young people and families; but only just. For others the connection hasn’t happened, and it feels like they’ll be starting from scratch. What might the rebuilding of those relationships and the new opportunities look like? What might serving our schools look like in a post-lockdown world? Finally, when the only place our children could be was home, supporting families as they discover God together has increased in importance. How can we make sure that all that was good about focusing on the family doesn’t get forgotten?
This seminar will be a discussion around these questions, and we would love to have you join us for this timely conversation.

  • Seminar 3: 'Walking with Jesus Through a Changing Climate'
COP26 Glasgow.  Bio-diversity.  Net-zero-carbon.  Growing back green.  All buzz phrases you’ll hear flying around the media as the issue of the climate and environmental crisis features large over the coming year.  But what does it all mean for our Baptist family?  For our growing as disciples of Jesus, and inviting others to share and know the fullness of life that Jesus brings?  Join in conversation with the Baptist Union Environmental Network - BUEN - and BMS World Mission.  Add your own voice to those from across the generations - from Millennials to Baby Boomers - and the world - from the UK to Peru.  Voices and stories that share the invitation to join God’s mission to the community of creation that is increasingly entrapped by climate change, bringing freedom, hope and peace over the coming decade.
Convened by The Baptist Union Environmental Network (BUEN) and BMS World Mission

  • Seminar 4: ‘Missional Threads’
Across the globe there have been major upheavals and challenges over the past couple of years. A cursory glance through the news and we hear fear, grief, instability, inequality, injustice, dislocation and, often unsettling rapid discontinuous change.  God’s people are not immune, but have been called to live as ambassadors of God’s Kingdom. This seminar ask a panel to consider the following questions:
  1. What have you sensed the Spirit saying to you/your community of Christ/Church at this time?  What is he calling you to take up?  What is he calling you to let go of?
  2. How is your answer to question 1 shaping how you/your church/Christ centred community live? Give us a flavour of how that is making a difference in your various contexts?
Come and hear how God is at work in a range of contexts, partnering with his people to reflect the Christian hope ‘as it is in heaven, so on earth'.
