Baptist Union Council meeting has been cancelled

The forthcoming Baptist Union Council meeting has been cancelled due to the unfolding Coronavirus situation.

Council members were due to meet at the Hayes Conference Centre in Swanwick, Derbyshire on 17-18 March.

After ‘careful thought and consultation’, General Secretary Lynn Green and Council moderator David Mayne have decided it would be ‘wise’ to cancel the meeting.

‘As a group who offers leadership across Baptists Together we felt that it was important for us to be supportive of nationwide efforts to slow down the spread of the virus,’ they explained in a letter to Council members on Friday afternoon.

‘We also recognise that many of us are community networkers and need to be particularly careful to ensure the safety of our churches, communities and our network through modelling best practice.

‘Furthermore, we believe that it is important for each of us to be able to focus on serving the needs of our own local communities at this time, as well as being Beacons of Prayer and Beacons of Hope in the places that God has put us.’

A number of decisions can be taken electronically, and will be circulated to members. These include resolutions for Assembly and Key Roles Nominations Team recommendations.

A number of conversations had been planned for discernment, and these will return to Council in October.

‘We are very grateful to those who have already invested time and energy in preparation for our Council meeting and who have set aside time to attend and are sorry that this meeting will now not go ahead,’ the letter continued. ‘We appreciate your grace and patience as we seek to make wise decisions in this rapidly changing situation.

‘This pandemic is both a huge challenge and also an opportunity to embody the Gospel.  With this in mind, Ken Benjamin, Lynn Green and Kang San Tan are calling our churches to prayer this weekend and details of this can be found here.’

‘Please join us in praying for all those affected by the Coronavirus and especially for the anxious and vulnerable in our communities.
‘We seek God for healing, help and hope for all in these days.’

The next Council meeting will be held Wednesday 21 – Thursday 22 October 2020 at High Leigh.
