Professor Robert Beckford


RobertBeckfordProfessor Robert Beckford will be responding to this year's Sam Sharpe Lecture, being delivered by Verene Shepherd on the theme of Reparations.

Professor Robert Beckford is an academic and broadcaster based in Birmingham.  He is currently the Chair of Theology and Culture in the African Diaspora at Canterbury Christ Church University.  Robert is a public intellectual who teaches in schools, prisons, and community centres as well as advising government departments and international bodies. He has won numerous awards for his media work including a BAFTA and two Race in the Media Awards.

As well as being Professor of Theology and Culture in the African Diaspora within the Theology and Religious Studies department at Canterbury Christ Church University, he is also a Visiting Professor to the Department of Theology & Religious Studies at King's College London.

His latest book, Documentary as Exorcism, has been published by Bloomsbury.

His latest television documentary, Battle for Christianity, looking at how immigration, radical social action, conservative morality and charismatic worship are transforming the face of Christianity in the UK, was broadcast on BBC1 in 2016.

His current research project is Jamaican Bible Remix, 2016.

His latest radio documentary Jamaican Bible Remixed, 2017 is available from the BBC website.
