SEBAStrode Crescent Baptist Church, Sheerness

  • Giving thanks to God as they celebrate the church's 150th anniversary in 2018

  • A small church encouraging a sense of 'church family' within the local community

  • A church which is seeking 'to serve the God who has called us and to be used by him in whatever way he chooses'

We are excited to be carrying on the work that was started here by the Revd Spurgeon 150 years ago.  We may have moved and changed from the initial church plant in a Blue Town pub, but we still serve a needy and run-down community, seeking to share the Good News of Jesus through actions as well as words.  As a small church, it is encouraging to observe that the sense of being 'church family' is starting to be held by those who come to the groups we run: identifying with us rather than seeing us as activity providers.

We thank God for:
  • The new families coming along to Sunday morning!  They are the answers to many prayers.  As a result, we are encouraging and supporting our work with children by entirely changing (again) how we 'do' Sunday mornings.  We are now all together for 75% of the service, doing crafts, acting out the story, worshipping through music, eating and anything else appropriate to the teaching point.  The children then leave for 15 minutes, and in this time, a much-abridged sermon is delivered!  As a result of this we are looking at establishing 'Home-Groups', where themes from Sunday mornings can be discussed at deeper levels.
  • Our Church! As mentioned before, on the weekend of 19/20 May we celebrated out 150th anniversary, and were encouraged by the preaching of the Revd Dennis Nolan.  When the history of Strode is looked at through the eyes of man, it is amazing how it has survived this long.  As a very poor congregation, in a poor and run-down area, it could have easily folded many times.  BUT GOD has his plans, and, through his goodness and grace we are still here, living, growing and giving him the glory.
  • Love! One of the people who has joined us in the past year is Fiona, who came along with her young daughter; she was brought along by Abbey.  Very soon Fiona started going out with Paul and on 21 July they will be marrying at Strode with friends, family and church family around them.  Please pray for them as they start their married life together.

We ask God:
  • For the good finishing of the renovation of our church house and for the right tenant to be found to rent it to
  • For the provision of a new projector as ours has just died!
  • And, most importantly, to make us into a family of disciples, who live lives that are different because of God’s love for us.

Plans for this coming year:
  • The establishment of Home Groups
  • The development of Prayer Ministry after services
  • The running of a seekers group

May we take this opportunity to thank all of you who support Home Mission, for without your help and support, we may well not have still been here today.  We are proof that every pound you give really counts and makes a difference to those who are in need.  We may not be all singing, all dancing and at the cutting edge of all that is new and innovative, but we do seek to serve the God who has called us and to be used by him in whatever way he chooses.
And… TO GOD BE THE GLORY.
The Revd Clare Van den Berg - Minister
