SEBANorthfleet North

  • Bringing God's love to a split community in a poor, deprived area of north Kent

  • A team committed and excited by the prospect of what God wants to do next in this area

BePartNorthfleet North is situated on the river Thames in North Kent, very close to Bluewater shopping centre.  It is a small village on the outskirts of Gravesend with little Christian influence.  The area has all the problems associated with a poor, deprived area - crime, drugs, violence etc.  The area is divided into three zones which the residents are very territorial about and it is very unusual for residents from one zone to venture into another.  This means that this area is split, to some extent.

Northfleet2018A small team of people has been working in this community for the past six years, bringing God’s love to this community in practical as well as spiritual ways, and building good relationships as we go.  Currently we run a kids' church every fortnight, an adults' church which has a solid core group of eight, a breakfast club for Mums, CAP courses on a one to one basis in conjunction with the local food bank, and we have just started using puppets to communicate the gospel.  It is our aim not to bring established religion to these people but firstly to build God’s kingdom here by being with the community.  Rather than doing things for or to them, we listen to what they say and do things with them, forming relationships as we go.  It is from these relationships with the community that allows us to be Christ for them and shows them that God cares for them, even if they don’t know it, and allows us to spread the Gospel.

Things to thank God for
  • Relationships that are growing stronger with the community
  • The volunteers who give their time to further God’s kingdom
  • Being constant in providing for our needs and giving us opportunities to use our gifts to advance the kingdom in ways we would have never thought of.

Things to ask God for
  • To help find new team members who have the skills and gifts we are lacking
  • More opportunities within the community to share the Gospel
  • For protection from spiritual attack. The enemy is really not happy!!

Practical needs
  • A hall and volunteers so we can start a 'make lunch' initiative in the summer holidays
  • A volunteer youth worker or someone who has a heart for teenagers to help me with detached work
  • Someone to help with fundraising
  • Someone who can help us with counselling, especially for those who are struggling with addiction.

This year’s goals and events
  • We’d like to see both the adults' and kids' churches grow and become weekly rather than bi-weekly.
  • Unfortunately the youth work stalled in the middle of last year so we are looking to start a detached youth programme to connect with the young adults where they live.
  • As many of the children in the area survive on free school meals this means that they can go hungry during the school holidays. So we are hoping to soon open a 'make lunch' kitchen in the area.
  • As the puppet show that we did for the foodbank's Christmas party was so well received by the community, we want to do more shows this year.
  • The breakfast club that was started in my flat is moving to Wallis Park. During my sabbatical in January I felt that God wanted me to build his kingdom there, so we have moved venue and someone has generously offered the use of their flat in which to hold this.
  • We are hoping to take some of the kids from kids' church either on a camping trip or to Spree later this year and we would also like to do a summer club of some sort.

How things generally are.
Things are generally good with North Northfleet; the team is still committed and excited by the prospect of what God wants to do next in this area.  We have so much coming up to be excited about and so much to be thankful to God for - how could we not be in a positive place?!  Last, but by no means least, we would like to offer our sincere thanks to everyone in the SEBA area for supporting our work in Northfleet North.  Whether that is by financial means or by prayer, you are all AWESOME in our books, you are helping change lives in a poor community, you are all kingdom builders. THANKYOU.
