SEBASmall in size but large in vision

Farnborough Baptist Church is located at the centre of the primarily residential North Camp area of Farnborough, near the army town of Aldershot.  The church building is well-used by a wide range of community groups and individuals.  They include an after-school club with which we have very good relationships and with whom we can share the Christian message, and a Zimbabwean church congregation which uses the church building on Sunday afternoons.  We are numerically quite small but we are very active for our size as we seek to bring a Christian presence to this community.  We have activities for young, old and all those in between, and believe the Lord is at work among us.
Please give thanks with us for -
  • Coming off Home Mission support - This is the last year that we will receive help from Home Mission to pay for ministry and therefore also the last time we will appear in this part of the website. Though being totally self-supporting is a challenge for a small church, it is good to have reached this point.
  • The First Floor - For years we have had rather unsightly steel girders in the main body of the church which were installed to stabilise the walls and roof and were also made strong enough to be able to bear a first floor level. We have come to realise that when people visit the church they see these girders and wonder why we have not had the faith to do anything with them. Well, this summer we will be going ahead with the construction of this first floor level, which will give more space upstairs and also make the ground floor area much more attractive.
  • Bible Explorer - Our pastor John and wife Judith are both involved in teaching Bible Explorer in local schools. This is a fun, interactive lesson-based method of teaching the timeline and stories of the Bible, OT and NT, to junior school children. We see this as kingdom work, introducing God and his values to a generation of children who might never consider him otherwise

Please pray with us for -
  • Children - Both our Youth club and Parents & Toddlers groups are popular but there is less for children in between. Our ALF club for junior age children will end this summer and in its place we plan to do a monthly Messy Church. Pray for our planning for this and that it will appeal to children of all ages, and their families. Pray too that there will be a growing group of children in our Sunday services.
  • Leadership - The current leadership group works effectively together but it is smaller than we would like. Please pray that we can develop new people to come into the church leadership to take the church forward in the years to come.
  • A new sense of God's presence as we begin to worship and work in the newly-ordered building. We want to know this ourselves but since the church building is so well-used by individuals and groups from the local community, we want all of them to feel that God is here. A multi-use building like ours can so easily seem just like any other hall for hire: we pray that it really will be known as a church above all - as well as being a place where everyone can feel comfortable and welcomed.

In the coming year we plan to continue our regular programme of outreach events including activities for older people, families and toddlers. Our two toddler sessions every Friday are always well-attended and we find this a very useful way of making contact with otherwise unchurched families; we hope such families will be among those interested in Messy Church, when that begins in the autumn. We plan to have one or two Alpha courses in the year to come and also to repeat a Christianity Explored course which we have been trialling recently for our older folk.

The church is still small in size but large in vision; please pray that we will together continue to see the potential for effective witness in the local community, and that we will not be daunted by the work this often demands. We do thank all the SEBA churches and Home Mission for your support.
The Revd John Layzell, Minister
