The American Memorial Chapel Travel Grant
Tuesday 12 May 2009
The American Memorial Chapel Travel Grant enables a member of the clergy of the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Free Churches to visit the USA for 3-4 weeks. The aim of the award is to broaden the knowledge of the candidate in his/her field of interest and to foster understanding and exchange of ideas between clergy of all denominations in the USA and in this country. The grant of £1,800 may be spread across several candidates.
The 2008 grant was awarded to The Reverend Lister Tonge, Chaplain at Ripon College Cuddesdon and Begbroke Priory, Diocese of Oxford. He will shortly be flying to New York, before heading to Portland, Oregon and San Francisco returning via Chicago and Washington DC. Revd Tonge intends to use the grant to investigate the spiritual formation of the clergy, within seminary cultures in the US.
“The whole trip was a wonderful, educational experience which has more than fulfilled my hopes and has, I hope, achieved the intention of the AMCTG to encourage scholarship, develop relations and further understanding between clergy and churches in our two countries.” Revd. Paul Walker, AMCTG scholar, 2003
“Through all of our experiences, we have been fascinated by the hugeness of their country and the warmth of their welcome and feel that in return we have been ambassadors of goodwill for our own country.” Revd. Alison Shaw, AMCTG scholar, 2004
