Striding up Snowdon.

Tuesday 30 June

Twenty-two walkers of all ages braved a misty mountain to raise money for BMS World Mission and the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB). The second annual ‘Walk the Talk’ weekend took place in Snowdon, north Wales last Saturday (27 June) and included nine staff members of both BMS and BUGB.

Other walkers included the chair of BMS’ Board of Trustees and his wife, a BMS mission worker’s mother and a BMS supporter from St Albans.

The Snowdon walk follows on from last year’s event doing the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, which raised £5,300.

Real challenge

BMS’ Gwyn Trehearne, who helped to organise the expedition, said, “Although some of the group were not confident that they’d be able to manage all of the walk, it was great that everyone completed it. For some, this was a real challenge.”

“The more competent among us were able to encourage the least-experienced walkers to go that bit further and I heard someone say that if it wasn’t for that support then they would have given in.”

The team climbed Snowdon via the Miners’ Track in three groups, with the fastest reaching the summit in about three hours.

Unfortunately, there was too much mist for any good views from the top.

After a stop for refreshments, the groups descended via different routes – and discovered warm sunshine at the bottom!

Thousands there

The BMS/BUGB walk co-incided with the National Three Peaks Challenge, where people hike or run up the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours.

This made for a busy climb, explained Gwyn. “I think the whole world and his wife was up Snowdon on Saturday – there were literally thousands there!

“I’ve climbed it lots of times but never had to queue before for parts of the track like we did. It made for a great atmosphere.”Money continues to come in for the walk, as participants collect cash from friends and family.

If you would like to support this initiative, you can still do so – click here to go to their ‘Just Giving’ page.

The final amount will be split equally between BMS and BUGB’s Home Mission Fund.
